Who will he Buy? Part Two

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 28/05/2003

NOW for the second instalment of "who will he buy?", where we take a hopeful but realistic look at who Paul Groves may swoop for in this summer's transfer market.

Ian Evatt
Ian Evatt

The Facts
Very versatile player who can play in central defence, midfield or attack if called upon, but is best known as a centre half. Just released by Derby County, Evatt, who is 21, made 22 appearances for the Rams with 18 of them coming last season. He had a loan spell with Northampton at the start of the 2001/02 season.

Is a move likely?
Derby is not too far away from Grimsby which means that locality-wise a deal could be possible. With only being a fringe player at Derby and being relatively young he won’t be demanding too high wages, so if interested, could be a realistic acquisition.
Likeliness Rating: 2

Carl Tiler
Carl Tiler

The Facts
Very experienced centre half who has played his trade at Charlton, Barnsley, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and more recently, Portsmouth, who released him last week. A tall defender who at the age of 33 has his best years behind him and suffered lots of injury problems last season, however, if Santos does leave, he could be the kind of defender Groves is looking for.

Is a move likely?
Very slim chance. With an experienced and injury-prone defender already on the books in Steve Chettle, Groves may be reluctant to sign another "thirty-something". Neither will he come cheap.
Likeliness Rating: 3

Carlo Corazzin
Carlo Corazzin

The Facts
Striker who Alan Buckley was reportedly interested in a few seasons back, but opted to sign Bradley Allen. Just released by Oldham, the Canadian international has played for Plymouth and Northampton – so knows the lower leagues well. He scored just 5 goals for the Latics last season and despite some impressive performances was released after the Boundary Park team’s failure to win in the second division play-offs.

Is a move likely?
Not out of the question. A typical "Grimsby" striker - small and nippy. Certainly not a target man, but is experienced. Would probably seriously consider a move to Town.
Likeliness Rating: 2

Andy Parkinson
Andy Parkinson

The Facts
23-year-old forward who has been given a free transfer by Tranmere Rovers. A pacy, skilful attacker who is equally at home on the right side of midfield. Was instrumental in Tranmere’s impressive cup run in the 2000-2001 season when he scored two goals to help Rovers beat Leeds in the Worthington Cup. His seven year stay with the Merseyside club was brought to a close at the start of the month after having a disappointing season, much of which he spent on the sidelines with injury.

Is a move likely?
Wide midfield positions are places where Paul Groves may be looking to fill, while a centre forward could also be on his shopping list. Parkinson is both and has done it at this level before. However, there are doubts over his fitness and commitment to be tied down to a long contract. Many times Parkinson claimed he was leaving Prenton Park, only to sign a new contract instead. Currently having a trial in Scotland with Aberdeen.
Likeliness Rating: 2

Ratings

5 Distinct possibility of signing
4 Depends on wages and willingness to move
3 Might need lots of persuasion to sign any contract
2 May be willing to move, but will Town be interested?
1 Long shot
