Jevons Is Crowned!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 22/04/2004

PHIL Jevons has been voted by the Fishy's readers as their choice for Player of the Year in the closest contest since the award was introduced. With the lead changing hands many times right up to an hour before the closing point of midnight, Mike Edwards was finally beaten by a short head.

Mike Edwards has been Town's outstanding defender of the campaign in an rearguard with an overall poor record. Phil Jevons' goal-scoring exploits from midfield in the latter half of the season won him many admirers, but he hardly featured in the first team during the early part of the season and is perceived by some as inconsistent

It has been a remarkable season for the former Evertonian who fell out with the board over his contract during the summer and at one point it looked like Jevons would just sit out the remaining year of his contract without featuring in the first team.

Despite being a regular goalscorer for the reserves, though, former Town boss Paul Groves preferred to play Boulding up front and a frustrated Jevons found himself nearly every week keeping the bench warm. The exit from the club of both Boulding and Groves meant Jevons could finally get a regular well-earned starting berth, and a personal highlight for him was a four goal haul against Barnsley as the Mariners romped home 6-1.

The full results are as follows:

Jevons 242
Edwards 230
Crane 12
Campbell 9
Barnard 15
Davison 6
