Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

It can be done!

Beat the Bookies: Week 14

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/11/2005

NEWCASTLE and Alan Shearer put paid to last week's bet, as well as breaking the hearts of many Grimbarians. But it was a fairly close game and certainly 6/1 for Town to win looked good value until the goal went in.

But as one door closes another one opens, and this weekend sees Grimsby enter the biggest cup competition of them all, the FA Cup. Unfortunately it is hard to recommend bet365.com's odds of 8/11 for the Mariners to beat Bristol Rovers. With Town having lost their last four home games, in fact the chances of Bristol Rovers causing an upset look tempting, with bet365.com making a Pirates' victory 10/3. Managerless Rovers' recent form isn't electric but then neither is Town's!

Elsewhere in the competition one of the best chances of an upset could come at Merthyr v Walsall, where the Welshmen (who are unbeaten at home this season) are adjudged 11/2 with bet365.com to beat Paul Merson's side.

Finally when was the last time Man Utd were as long odds as 11/5 with bet365.com to win a match at home? Although Utd have not been firing on all cylinders recently, could they raise their game sufficiently to overcome Chelsea, who likewise have not been flawless of late, on Saturday?

All said and done the recommended bet is for the Mariners to lose, which will prove a small consolation if they actually do and I dearly hope I am wrong!
