Contract Talks Break Down

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 10/03/2006

TOWN pair Steve Mildenhall and Rob Jones have both turned down new contract offers, despite the club's warning earlier this week that no better deal would be forthcoming.

The Town 'keeper is out of contract in the summer, and would be free to depart on a Bosman in May. Rob Jones, however, has an option in his contract for a further year, but the club are hoping to draw up a new deal which ties the central defender to Grimsby for longer than that.

With a few weeks left of the season, there is still time for talks to be re-opened later this year, but it may depend on Grimsby getting promotion before a breakthrough could be made.

Town chairman John Fenty told the Grimsby Telegraph: "Basically, we have made the best offers the football club can at this moment in time. These have not been accepted but that may not be the end of the matter.

"As the League Two run-in progresses, it may become clearer whether we will achieve promotion to League One or not. This could give the club more room to manoeuvre and the offers may be re-visited."

All the fans can do is support the Mariners as frequently and vocally as they can in the remaining 11 games to try and help them secure one of the three automatic promotion places.
