Watkiss Confirms Akinfenwa Interest

GRIMSBY Town assistant manager Stuart Watkiss has confirmed the club's interest in Northampton striker Adebayo Akinfenwa as a ready made replacement for the departing Gary Jones, but insists that defenders are still the top priority.

Speaking about Akinfenwa, Mr Watkiss told Mariners Net: "It is a player that we have certainly enquired about.

"The manager has spoken to his agent and we have lodged our interest but that is as far as it has gone.

"The manager is back from holiday today and Akinfenwa is one of several players he will make further enquiries about.

The 26-year-old forward is out of contract at the Sixfields Stadium and has been offered a new deal after bagging 6 in 6 for the Cobblers.

However bringing in defenders is still the main focus for the Mariners, as we have only have two recognised fairly inexperienced centre halfs and no recognised right back.
