Unhappy New Year

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/01/2015

GRIMSBY slumped to their second post-Christmas Blundell Park defeat in succession, losing 2-1 at home to Macclesfield in another disappointing home performance. Macclesfield opened the scoring after half an hour through Johnstone to give the visitors an early lead.

But Pittman levelled the game shortly before half time and the game appeared to be heading for a draw until Adriano Moke set up Whitaker to finish from a narrow angle with just six minutes to go.

Grimsby failed to create many chances of note throughout the game and even Town's goal came from a mistake by the opposition.

Scott Brown replaced captain Craig Disley in midfield, while Paul Bignot replaced the injured Carl Magnay at right-back and Jack Mackreth was preferred to Scott Neilson on the right wing.

After a first half with few chances for either side Macclesfield took then lead when Fairhurst's cross was only partially cleared by McKeown and fell to Johnstone who drilled the ball into the top corner of the net.

Town soon equalised though when a corner was not properly cleared by the Macclesfield defence who presented it to Pittman, who needed no invitation to shoot and blasted it past the 'keeper to level the scores.

With chances few and far between the late winner was once again due to a ball that McKeown failed to clear properly and this time it was the turn of Whitaker to score from a narrow angle.

Town now have a weekend off to clear up the niggling injuries which have disrupted the team, then they have the distraction of the FA Trophy at home to Gateshead.
