Town Draw Blank

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 30/09/2017

TOWN and Lincoln drew in the Lincolnshire derby this afternoon with neither side able to break to deadlock. Town created very little all afternoon, and Lincoln had what few chances there were.

Russell Slade decided to rotate his strikeforce, bringing in Jones and Matt in place of Hooper and Vernon. Otherwise, the side was the same as that which started against Colchester on Tuesday.

Town struggled to break down Lincoln's defence but the one time they did was when Michael Bostwick was forced to haul down Dembele, but the free-kick came to nothing. Lincoln should have done better when Arnold hit a weak shot straight at McKeown. But otherwise the first half was a dull affair.

Town had to endure a goalmouth scramble early in the second half when Collins skied a clearance, but McKeown eventually gathered the ball after a goalmouth melee.

Russell Slade brought on Vernon for the ineffectual Matt, then Rose came on for Summerfield. Lincoln's Green had a good chance to score in front of goal but sliced his shot wide.

In the last ten minutes, McKeown made a fantastic reflex save with his legs to deny Bostwick, who failed to find the target with the rebound.

Town's only threat was from set pieces, although it was largely a theoretical threat as the delivery was not good enough for anyone to benefit from them.

Grimsby can be pleased with their defensive before, which was solid, but going forward they were woeful. There are too many players not performing well enough. The new signings from the summer have largely failed to make much of an input and Town simply struggle to score enough goals. Promotion looks a very distant prospect, and the most immediate target is to accumulate 50 points as fast as possible.
