The Final Straw

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/01/2018

GRIMSBY succumbed to their ninth consecutive game without a win in one of the most humiliating performances of recent years. Town had two players sent off and conceded three goals in a self-inflicted defeat. The result surely means the end of manager Russell Slade.

Zak Mills was the only change at full back, replacing the injured Ben Davies.

Town gave themselves a mountain to climb when Mitch Rose was sent off in the first 10 minutes for a high challenge, and it was no surprise when Yeovil took the lead through Lewis Wing on 14 minutes.

Summerfield and Osborne then had to be separated after an altercation, for which Osborne was booked, and which made Town look a laughing stock.

Town limited Yeovil to one goal at half-time and created a few half chances themselves to give Grimsby a glimmer of hope.

In the second half, Town regrouped and an equaliser didn't look inconceivable until the match was put beyond reach when Osborne received a second yellow and Town faced the last half hour with nine men.

Ex-Mariner Rhys Browne came off the bench and scored a second to condemn Grimsby to a ninth game without a win. Jake Gray hammered in the third and final nail in the coffin.

The match ended 3-0 to the Glovers, and presumably will be Russell Slade's last as Grimsby manager.
