Imps Win the Derby

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/01/2019

GRIMSBY continued their losing start to 2019 with a 1-0 defeat to neighbours Lincoln. The Mariners conceded a first-half goal and never looked likely to score. The task was made harder when James McKeown was sent off for a deliberate foul and Town ere forced to bring reserve 'keeper off the bench.

The result means Grimsby have lost every game in 2019 and are yet to score since December.

Town played a new look 3-5-2 formation with the two Swedes in defence alongside Luke Hendrie. Mitch Rose, Harry Davis and Alex Whitmore also came into the side in a defensive-looking midfield

Lincoln took an early lead when in the aftermath of a corner the ball found its way to Toffolo on the edge of the box and he volleyed it through a crowded penalty area straight into the net.

A mistake by the Lincoln defence led to a good chance for Elliot Embleton but the on-loan winger sliced wide from a good position.

Town withstood long spells of Lincoln pressure to remain in the game with a one-goal deficit. They looked more dangerous as the first half progressed but without the cutting edge.

McKeown kept Town in the game early in the second half with a good save to deny Akinde. But McKeown's last act was a wild challenge on Danny Rowe who had broken through Town's rearguard. Although it was well outside the box it was deemed to be a professional foul and McKeown received a red card. Sam Russell came on for an unexpected appearance with Whitmore making way.

Lincoln could negotiate the remaining time another day and it proved another defeat at the hands of the Imps.

Town must dust themselves down and dry and get something from another tricky away game on Tuesday at Forest Green, for which McKeown will be suspended.
