Wilko To Cardiff

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 30/05/2003

DUMPED Grimsby Town Reserve coach Paul Wilkinson could be set to join old boss Lennie Lawrence at Cardiff City. Wilkinson was shown the door at Blundell Park yesterday in a cost cutting move.

Wilko said the Grimsby Telegraph has already spoken to Lawrence and could be made an offer to fill the same role he has vacated at Town.

Lawrence does not have a reserve team coach with assistant manager Ian Butterworth the only other member of the first-team coaching staff.

Wilkinson has also been linked with the manager's job at Barnsley as uncertainty grows over the future of Glyn Hodges.

Wilko told the Grimsby Telegraph: "I'm disappointed but I have to look to the future. I want to take the opportunity to wish everybody at the club all the best."

Lawrence brought Wilkinson back to Blundell Park in October 2000 - one of the best moves in his stint in the hotseat.

Town boss Paul Groves has revealed that the decision to offload Wilkinson was out of his hands. "We did everything in our power to keep hold of him because of how highly we rate him and the work that he did," said Groves. "It's a decision that was out of our hands and has been taken by the board."
