Campbell Signs Three Year Deal

By: Fishy News Team
Date: 30/05/2001

IN AN EVENTFUL DAY for the Mariners Leicester City midfielder Stuart Campbell has put pen to paper on a £200,000 3 year deal which will keep the 23-year-old Scot at Blundell Park until 2004. Also today right-sided defender Danny Butterfield agreed a new 1 year contract with the club.

Campbell, who featured in 40 games for the Mariners whilst on a season-long loan from Filbert Street, netting twice, is expected to take up Kevin Donovan right-sided midfield berth if the Yorkshireman departs from Blundell Park this summer, as looks on the cards.

"Certainly it's a good signing for us" Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence told Radio Humberside. "We're right for him and he's right for us. Kevin will go and he'll (Campbell) probably move over to his more favoured right hand side so we should be well equipped down that channel."

Lawrence was full of praise for his new signing, saying that he was "full of running" and "could play right across the midfield". The one area of his game that the Grimsby manager is looking for the 23-year-old midfielder to improve upon however is his goalscoring. "We're looking for between 5 and 10 goals from him as opposed to 1-2 last season." said the Town boss.

The news follows that from earlier in the day when assistant manager John Cockerill signed a two year contract extension to his current deal at Blundell Park.
