The Opposition

Overview

Brentford still hold hopes of reaching the play-offs even after recent defeats to Morecambe and high-flying Peterborough, but a win over relegation-bound Wrexham on Saturday has reignited hope in moving out of the league. Brentford, though only 8 points off the play-offs, have a minus 12 goal deficit to contend with, 7 of which could be attributed to the league's heaviest defeat back in November where a 7-0 drubbing at Peterborough showed some of the defensive frailties Brentford have contended with during the campaign. But safe in the knowledge that a 6-0 win against us would see them leapfrog us is the table it is time for Brentford to buckle down and hope that playing for points will be enough to secure a play-off place. Only 2 wins in 8 have will have created some major concerns for management, players and fans alike in London but the run coming up involving Hereford, Rochdale, Lincoln and ourselves is hardly forgiving. With such a tough run in at the business end of the season it is going to be a struggle for Andy Scott’s men to pull off the feat.

The Team
One of the smaller squads in the league Scott has 18 contracted players to work with and a further 6 on loan to arrange around a football pitch. In between the posts Scott relies on the former Hib’s star Simon Brown to keep goal with a defensive partnership of Heywood and Osbourne who have conceded 57 goals in total this season resulting in a minus 12 goal deficit so far the highest placed team with such a loss on their books. But with the play-offs still a far off possibility Brentford will hope target men such as Ricky Shakes (left) who got 2 at the weekend against Wrexham will be up to the task. With another striker on 13 this season so far it;s not too much of a hard ask for Brentford to keep winning and may at a long shot pull off a surprise such as Bristol Rovers last year. Midfield consists of young Ryan Dickson formerly of Torquay and even younger Craig Stone who started his career across London at Gillingham (yes its in Londonish).

Key Player
Essex born Glenn Poole (left) is Brentford’s leading goal scorer on 13, despite a league career of just one game for Rochdale during a loan spell from Grays Athletic prior to joining the Bees. But 13 goals from 35 starts is an impressive run for a team stuck in mid-table. Quick to the ball and a poacher's finisher the experienced striker is a great distributor of the ball and will be a real problem for Grimsby at close quarters.
