Gillingham v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 05/09/2008

THE Mariners hectic schedule pulls up down south at recently relegated Gillingham......... Woo-Hoo!

Home > 2008-2009 Season > Previews > Gillingham (a)

The Opposition

Overview

Between the years 2004 and 2007 Gillingham clocked up as many managers as Martin Butler has miles. Eight managers in total have passed through The Gills' doors since Andy Hessenthaler last led a Gillingham team out against Town. The constant changing of managers could have something to do with Gillingham’s deep decline from playing in The Championship in 2005 to living it up down here in League Two.

The Team
Their relegation from League One, missing out safety by four points, would usually mean wholesale changes across the board. Mark Stimson (above) though was able to hold on to his position as manager and, with 41 games in charge of his first club Gillingham under his belt, it means the world of difference as stability seems to be exactly what the southerners need. Changes on the pitch weren’t spared: Delroy Facey (left), Danny Cullip, Barry Cogan, Efe Sodje and Aaron Brown all faced the axe and moved to their respective clubs. While Mark McCammon from Doncaster and Tyrone Berry from Stevenage were brought in as well as two Spurs loanees and Curtis Weston of Leeds was also brought in as a temporary replacement.

One to Watch
Nicky Southall. The former Mariners' midfielder and at one point goalkeeper (god that was years ago now) is back at Gillingham for the 3rd time - 4th if you count a loan period just before he signed again for his second period from Norwich. Though not likely to make much of an appearance its still nice to see old familiar faces and let's face it Lester did it on Wednesday, what’s the betting Southall will do it on Saturday?
