Defeat in Tyneside

GRIMSBY ended their nine match unbeaten run with a defeat at Gateshead's International Stadium. The loss means Town have lost ground on the two teams above them, who are now strong favourites to win the title.

Paul Hurst dropped midfielder Craig Clay in place of new signing Jon Nolan, while defender Danny East returned from injury at right back and Richard Tait switched to left back in place of the injured Gregor Robertson.

The game's only goal came early in the game after a poor start by the Mariners. Former Town midfielder Paddy McLaughlin set up in-form striker Pattison who slotted the ball past McKeown for a third minute lead.

The Mariners struggled to create anything in a low-key first half and only found their stride after the break. Nolan should have scored on his full debut but fired straight at the 'keeper after creating a good chance for himself.

Grimsby improved in the second half but were unable to find the target and ended with a rare clean sheet and nothing to show for an afternoon's work. The defeat was compounded by victories for leaders Cheltenham and Forest Green.
